Because if you love it and are proud of the work you're doing, others will recognize it too!
Over the last couple of years I've read probably hundreds of (mostly pointless) articles about blogging, growing your community and how to make that pretty blog of yours successful. And since I've been a part of the blogosphere for four years now and have learned a lot of things about this amazing ever expanding virtual universe but also have made several huge content changes I decided to share a few advices and stories from personal experiences that can maybe help out to someone who's currently stuck in a rut or feeling a bit down about their own blogging universe.
So let's dive in.
The best advice I ever got about blogging is pretty nice and simple: WRITE A BLOG YOU'D LOVE TO READ.
And, in my humble opinion, everything you need for happy blogging is written down in that one short sentence. Take a piece of paper and brainstorm ideas with yourself, for the start. Put down your main and strongest interests, the ones that make you get out of bed in the morning, the ones you think about all the time. For me that would be photography, movies, writing, reading books, exploring places and sharing personal stories. See, it doesn't have to be only one thing.
Now think about why do you want to write about those things and what kind of message do you wish to send out to people. Is your goal to inspire and create, find people with similar interests from all over the world or maybe start a business?
These steps are very important but what is even more important is that you stay completely honest with yourself along the way. Because most of the time, blogging is a pretty lonely, one person show game and the healthy relationship you have with yourself is everything.
Now, let's go back to that first line: WRITE A BLOG YOU'D LOVE TO READ.
What are your favourite blogs and what makes them so special that you want to visit them on a daily basis? I have been reading Garance Dore for so many years because of great story telling and she is still one of my favourite bloggers yet Smile, Snap, Sparkle isn't a fashion blog. Study them a bit and see if there's something you can learn from them - because no one is born knowing it all. And don't be afraid to ask all sorts of questions - I know I do that pretty much every day!
Experiment, write down bunch of ideas and see which ones make you feel really good - then publish those stories. Don't worry about numbers, page views and all that shit because the most important thing is that you truly enjoy this little enviroment you've created and somehow people tend to forget this one so often.
If you don't love (and I really mean - LOVE) your blog, why even bother keeping it alive? Primarily you should be the one liking your content. You should be super excited about publishing a new post. You should believe in yourself.
And when you're feeling happy and confident, when you're writing about things that matter most deeply to you, then people will recognize the effort and you'll find your little (or huge, who knows) squad in this crazy parallel universe called the blogosphere. And never let yourself think that no one is gonna be interested in what YOU have to say - this world is so big and there's so many of us that there's literally no chance that you can't find a group with similar thinkers. No way.
Now tell me, what are some of the best blogging advices that you've learned along the way, which ones were the most useful for you and your blog?
