Because we all need a little spark of magic for the beginning of the week.
Today, let me introduce you to Michal Ajvaz's novel 'The Luxembourg Gardens' and walk you through the author's world of magic realism.
The story follows a series of events experienced by Parisian teacher Paul during the summer holidays. One morning, while procrastinating instead of working, he hits the wrong key on his computer keyboard and misspells a word.
In his browser he gets only one search result for the unknown word Okitubis and instead of shutting it down and returning to his daily routine, Paul clicks on it and decides to explore the crazy and surreal story which unfolds in front of him which results in the best and the worst moments of his life.
The action is set in Paris, Niece, Nantes, New York State, Moscow, the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia, Taormina and Lara, a town of author's invention. There's love, hate, crazy revenge, fear, travel, weird encounters, beginning of one story written in the unknown language and a teeny tiny private island which holds one crazy love story.
From the moment you open up the first page, let the imagination guide you from there on and before you know it, you'll be captivated by this new world which will make you question so many things. Open your mind to the unknown, try to find some sense in moments which actually make no sense at all and challenge yourself as a reader.
Imagine hitting a wrong letter on your keyboard and discovering something new and unknown to the majority of the world. Imagine the excitement.
Imagine having a strange text in front of you written in a language only its author understands. Do you try to read it? Make some sense of it? Or do you just click 'close the tab' button and move on?
I dare you to spend some time in your fantasy world.
Imagine things. Create stories and worlds no one but you understands.
Step away from the routine and spice it up a bit with some magic.
Give deeper meanings to things you write, draw and film.
Go below the surface.
A stunning sunset can be so much more than only an epic scene just like your favourite Vans sneakers are actually way more than just a footwear you happen to love.
Challenge yourself and then the entire world around you.
