'I mean, a new dress doesn't get you anywhere; it's the life you're living in the dress, and the sort of life you had lived before, and what you will do in it later.' - Diana Vreeland
For me, these few lines perfectly sum up how I feel about personal style and why I'm so interested in stories behind the clothes. At the beginning of this adventure all of this used to be about me and documenting my style but over time this blog became so much more and now it's also about you guys and everyone who has a certain story to tell.
That's why I decided to start this new category called 'Smile, STYLE, Sparkle' (I talked about it in one of my previous posts as well) that's gonna be focused on personal style of different individuals who don't use their clothes as a meaningless accessory but as a form of self-expression. They don't give a damn about trends, aren't afraid to spill red vine on a pricey shirt or dress, don't care what someone else might say because they're too busy enjoying life in the outfits of their choices.
Obviously the first person I wanted to photograph was my amazing sister Katarina because she's my favourite person ever (and has a great sense of style without ever thinking about it). Luckily right at that time she decided to come and visit us here in Rijeka for the weekend (she lives in Zagreb) which enabled me to get this party started the way I wanted it to. So, now it's time for me to shut up and let her speak instead. Let's go!
Me: Dear Kate, welcome to Rijeka, it's always so amazing to have you here! How do you feel in this city and now that you've visited it several times, what are your impressions of it?
Katarina: I absolutely LOVE Rijeka. It has some kind of different vibe when compared with Zagreb. I always feel my mind is at ease the minute I step out of the bus and feel the closeness of the sea. I guess I also kind of love it for the fact that it reminds me of a city from my all time favourite video game Final Fantasy VIII.
Have do you pack for a quick weekend getaway? Tell me what are 5 things you can't leave the house without.
My weekend getaway must haves are my Ray-Ban Clubmaster sunglasses and old pair of the classis Vans trainers. Then there are my Sennheiser headphones because I always walk around listening to music. Also I never go anywhere without my favourite Pandora ring you featured in your previous blog post about me. And there days I never go anywhere without my new MAC lipstick.
I know Rijeka is only 2 hours drive away from Zagreb, but sometimes even that can be a total pain in the ass when you're travelling alone. How do you entertain yourself during the drive, what do you do to kill time?
I am the biggest fan of sleeping during the bus drives. I really love it. I turn on my music library on shuffle, close my eyes and enjoy falling asleep like a baby. And sometimes I read, if I’m driving during the daylight. This time I’ve read “10 thoughts about time” by Bodil Jönsson.
I don't think I've ever seen you in a crop top (childhood not included) so you can imagine my surprise when I saw you pulling it out of a bag! Where did you get it and how / why did you decide to buy it in the end?
Well…I’ve bought it a year ago thanks to our Mom who thought it would look good on me. I was a bit sceptic but turns out I really love it. I got it from H&M. Sometimes I still feel weird when I decide to wear it because I’m not a greatest fan of summer and summer clothes.
Share something nobody knows about this outfit.
I don’t know if there is something really special about this outfit. I just really like it. It makes me feel happy, positive and confident. Maybe this outfit still waits for its story.
When it comes to surviving the summer in the city, what are some of the most important style things and tips that you swear by?
I don’t survive summer in the city. I die a little bit per day, every day. Just kidding. I love spending summer in Zagreb because it’s relatively empty and these days I walk a lot, catching Pokemons while going home from work. I usually have my hair up in messy buns and always wear sunglasses. Also, I like wearing long but light trousers and some light material shirt.
Tell me one thing you would never wear during summer.
BOOTS!! I just don’t get it. The whole concept of summer boots is too hard for me to grip. I love boots, during winter but I really don’t want to wear them during the whole year.
Tell me one item you always have by your side during summer.
A bottle of water. Because every time I call you when going home from work you ask me if I have a bottle of water and then you tell me the importance of hydrating. You see, I listen to you.
You work in a corporate environment but your off-duty style is very cool and casual. How do you combine these two different approaches to fashion?
You know I was always a bit of a punk-geek when it came to my fashion style so it was strange for me when I started wearing (and liking) business shirts and shoes, and everything that comes to your mind when someone says “corporative lawyer”. But I try to keep both my styles in sync. I combine them so that they really do represent me as a person.
Name one clothing item / accessory you can't live without and why?
The Pandora ring I’ve previously mentioned. It reminds me of an accomplishment I had in my third year of law school and I wear it every day to remind myself that we need to keep pursuing our dreams.
Katarina was wearing:
Ray-Ban Clubmaster sunglasses
H&M top and pants
* A little note: I'm currently photographing in and around RIJEKA area so if you live here and would like to be featured on the blog, please don't hesitate to let me know via mail or any social media channels :)
